The ScREenery, animated: Spirited Away (2001)
Our next film in our animated series chosen by Birthright volunteer Mher.
A young girl, upon moving to a new neighbourhood, wanders into a world of spirits and magic, gods and witches, where her parents are turned into pigs. She must find her own way out of this strange, unknown world.
This is a coming-of-age story, about personal growth and slowly becoming aware of the world, its politics and economics, around you. Through this story, Miyazaki wished to explore and critique contemporary capitalism in Japan, and the notion of the dissolution of societal unity through the growth of capitalism. This film showcases Studio Ghibli's distinctive animation style, which has been attempted by no-one else.
